Hello everyone,
I am sorry to write this in English but my Italian is a bit rusty
Yesterday I came across this forum and thought to join for a new project.
A while ago I bought an old lathe, a Caser 400. As it needs some restoration,
I am looking for some documentation. Unsuccessful till now :-|
If any of you could help me here, I would be very grateful!
I like to give this piece of Italian mechanical history a new life...
Photos will follow...

Grazie!
Paul

Ciao Paul, welcome at Meccanica & Dintorni. This is an Italian speaking forum... of course we have a lot of users who can follow and participate to a thread in English (we also have an Italo-american guy in the staff, more American than Italian to be honest.... :risatina:) but this would be unfair for all the rest of the people.
In a standard situation, I would ask you to please present yourself with a message in this section viewforum.php?f=3 , but I think we can make an exception for you.
I don't have the manual you're looking for, but I translate your message so everyone can read and eventually post the manual if they have it.

Grazie.

Hi Paul,

please let me welcome you on Meccanica e Dintorni's forum on behalf of all its members. We'll find a way to translate what you write in italian, and I officially volunteer to be the one that takes care of it. Beside McMax, of course.
Speaking of your lathe, I'd first and foremost like to give you my compliments: you just found one of the finest small-swing italian made lathes, and from the photo you posted it looks like it's in fair condition.
If you speak a little french, you'll agree with me that this web forum is a treasure trove: http://www.usinages.com.
I remember reading a thread on that forum, in which a guy came across (and then rebuilt) a lathe identical to yours... here it is:

Happy reading, please keep us posted!

Ciao Paul,

Buona lettura, tienici aggiornati!
Ricordo di aver letto una discussione su quel forum, nella quale ad un tipo era capitato tra le mani un tornio identico al tuo, che aveva poi restaurato, eccola qui:

Hi Ocean,
Good info! Thanks so much. I can really get some background I need to restore mine.
The one in France indeed looks worse then mine. It has no rust at all, all nice and oily

I'm pleased with the fact that this lathe has a good reputation. And I must say that it is well build.
When I opened it up, I saw some broken gears and the gear boxes were dry. Also someone abused
the lathe here ans there... But I think I can restore it to its fomer glory

From the Frech guy restoring his, I saw the gearboxes completely filled wit grease, this
was news to me... I thought the were oiled. So great info!

@ McMax, correct, this is the one! Found the same photos online and liked the original
colors. Found this paint underneath the blue paint mine is covered in.
Very stylish! I think I'll paint it like that! But first it has to run.

Thanks again!

Hi Mafa,
that's the one! I guess your's is a bit more modern (and that for a classic lathe... :risatina: ); mine has still the "straight" tooth weels.
Rest is completely the same. Nice machine!

You can wonder how many Caser sold of these... Must be some as they I found mine in the Netherlands.
I have proof it has been here a while; I found a piece of newspaper in the lathe from the late 1950's ;)

Hi all,
some pictures of the work in progress

Some surprises! :frusta:

- main shaft is worn out at the chuck side (how does someone do that...! :muro: )
Probably will need to weld a adaptor plate to the shaft or something... :( Any ideas?

- some bend and broken gears... It's module 1.25 and they are still available luckily!

Enough to do in the next year, my wife will miss me :risatina:

Happy newyear everybody!

I have a lathe just like yours, in fact I had two, but now I reside in Austin, Tx, and I only have one now.
It's in perfect shape, it works beautifully, considering how small it is it's very rigid.
If you want some more info and original docs write to me an email at omblauman@gmail.com
The real expert on caser here is Mafa but he doesn't speak english.
He told me to let him know if you need something specific through me.
Good luck, oscar
